Rare 1739 (second) edition of this moral-historical handbook of Benedictine saints printed expressly for the use of the nuns at the Benedictine convent of Santa Maria degli Angioli in Verona. This edition is unrepresented in U.S. libraries, and the 1725 first edition is found in the U.S. only at Johns Hopkins.
The Jesuit Cesare Calino (1670-1749) wrote the Riflessi Istorici, e Morali to provide the nuns of S. Maria degli Angioli with historically sound vitae, not mere panegyrics, of the most prominent Benedictines. The work treats Saint Benedict, Saint Placidus (his disciple), and Saint Scholastica (founder of the Benedictine nuns), as well as the several easily confused St. Gertrudes (e.g., Gertrude of Nivelles, Gertrude of Franconia, Gertrude of Delft, Gertrude of Vorburg, Gertrude of Eisleben). The volume concludes with a discussion of the feast day of All Benedictine Saints, “as celebrated in the Santa Maria degli Angioli in Verona on 15 November” (pp. 303-24).
OCLC and KVK locate no U.S. examples of this edition. The 1725 first edition is found in the U.S. only at Johns Hopkins.
