Suffrages for the dead in Cremona.
[Purgatory]. S. Domenico in Cremona. Confessiamo noi sottoscritti d’ aver ricevuto di Milano Lire … [Cremona:], s.n., dated in manuscript 1 May 1829. [10.9 x 9.5 cm], [1] f. letterpress form with woodcut of skull and crossbones, competed in manuscript. Minor staining.
Letterpress receipt—decorated with a woodcut of a skull & crossbones—for money paid at the church/monastery of San Domenico in Cremona for suffrages for the souls of those in purgatory. The sum of one and a half Milanese lire was paid on 1 May 1829 by a certain Luigi Zanibelli, a member of the confraternity of the Amine Purganti. Ephemeral items related to suffrages of this sort were printed in great numbers at the time, but individual examples only rarely survive today.
The church of S. Domenico in Cremona was demolished in 1869-71 and is today perhaps best remembered as having been the burial placed of the luthier Antonio Stradivari (c. 1644-1737).
