A new Capuchin in Palermo: Unrecorded, unused enrollment form.
[Palermo] / [Order of Friars Minor Capuchin] / [Etching]. Noi F. Provinciale Dell’Ordine de’ Frati Minori Capuccini della Provincia di Palermo… S.l. [likely Palermo]: s.n., s.a. [late 18th or early 19th century]. [26.1 x 17.9 cm], [1] f. etching. Narrow margins, a few very minor stains. Well preserved.
Unrecorded late 18th- or early 19th-century etched form used to commemorate the enrollment of a new member of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin in Palermo. This example of the form was never filled out, and it is tempting to read this fact as symbolic of the struggles faced by the Capuchins (and all Orders) during the secularizations and revolutions of circa 1780s-1840s.
The text welcomes the new Capuchin and grants him participation in all, “masses, orations, fasts, mortifications, obediences, pilgrimages, silences, abstinences, sermons, vigils, discipline, regular observances, penances, resignations, spiritual exercises, and pious works.”
This text is depicted as if woven into a tapestry held aloft by two putti. Surrounding the fictive tapestry are eight medallions depicted as if nailed to the wall. On them are images of the Madonna & Child, Franciscan saints (Francis, Antony of Padova, Felix of Cantalice, Felix of Nicosia), Catherine of Alexandria, the Franciscan Arms (Cross with stigmata of Christ & Francis), and the Five Wounds of Christ.
This etching is not located by OCLC, KVK, or ICCU/OPAC, nor have I seen it reproduced in the literature of the Palermo Capuchins.
