Rare (no U.S. copies) first and only edition of this anonymous critique of Otto von Gemmingen’s (1755-1836) Ueber die Königlich Preussische Association zu Erhaltung des Reichssystems (1785), a defense of Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II’s (1741-91) policy of attempting to add Bavaria to Habsburg lands against the opposition of King Frederick II of Prussia (1712-86). Notable here is the work’s unusual title-page vignette depicting a pair of spectacles, a visual metaphor, no doubt, for critical reading and the perspicacity of Enlightenment inquiry.

The writer and diplomat Otto Heinrich von Gemmingen zu Hornberg is today perhaps best remembered for his friendship with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-91) and for his dramaturgical work at the newly founded Nationaltheater Mannheim.
