[Wine] / [Confraternity]. Il J. C. Causidico, e Notaro Collegiato Sig. Bonaventura Gramegna Tesoriere dell’Illustriss. Congregazione di S. Ambrogio di questa nostra Città di Pavia, gli piacerà. Folio [26.7 x 17.9 cm], [1] f. manuscript, [1] f. letterpress form with manuscript annotation, [1] f. manuscript, with woodcut of S. Ambrogio on letterpress form. Sealed with wax at left edge. Untrimmed, some wrinkling, small tear at edge of wax seal, otherwise well preserved and legible.
Unrecorded letterpress form, enclosed and sealed with wax within a manuscript bifolium, recording payment made in 1748 by the treasurer (Bonaventura Gramegna) of the Congregazione della Pietà di S. Ambrogio di Pavia to a certain Antonio Maria Fiocco for the delivery of wine from the nearby town of Casanova Lonati. Casanova Lonati is located in the Oltrepò Pavese, a region today known for its sparkling wines, most notably its Bonarda. The document represents a rather rare survival of 18th-century viticultural/oenological information from this region.
The letterpress form is headed by a woodcut of Saint Ambrose, under whose spiritual protection a group of noblemen formed a confraternity in Pavia in 1573. The Congregazione della Pietà di S. Ambrogio devoted much effort to eleemosynary matters (and, apparently, wine drinking), before its suppression in 1780.
The letterpress form is unrecorded in OCLC, KVK and OPAC.
