Parchment pouch fashioned from French writing exercise.
[Writing Pedagogy] / [French Penmanship]. [Parchment pouch]. S.l.: s.n. [inscription illegible to me], [1851?]. [26.2 x 18.5 cm], [2] ff. parchment manuscript folded and sewn into pouch, ties present. Rubbing and edge wear, tear at attachment of one of the ties, large ink stain.
An unusual parchment pouch fashioned from a recycled leaf previously used by someone learning French penmanship. The leaf includes the words (among others), “souvenons nous,” “aimer dieu,” and “immemorial” repeated in rows in the manner of a writing exercise.
Tiny script along the seams on both sides of the pouch would seem to be note about its maker, but I can only make sense of the last characters, which read “1851”; on the interior of the pouch “1851” is repeated. The pouch was acquired in Canada, and so the able paleographer who deciphers the inscriptions should leave open the possibility that it was written there and not necessarily in France.
